Scripture Union Daily Guide 29th April 2026 – Outline
Jeremiah 46-51 is a series of warnings sent by God through Jeremiah to nine nations about impending judgements (Jeremiah 46:1). This shows that our God is King over all the nations of the earth, and He will hold them accountable for their actions, whether now or later. Although Egypt had a very skilful and well-equipped army, it would be thoroughly defeated at the battle of Carchemish by the Babylonians (Jeremiah 46:2).
Carefully go through the passage again and note how Jeremiah describes their military equipment (Jeremiah 46:3-4), their skill and confidence (Jeremiah 46:7-9). Nevertheless, they fled before the Babylonian army (Jeremiah 46:5-6). Why were they so shamefully defeated? See Jeremiah 46:10; cf. James 4:6. The Egyptians marched boastfully and confidently to battle (Jeremiah 46:8), but the Lord had determined that they would lose the battle.
Even their allies could not help (Jeremiah 46:9). What can we learn from this? When God is against a man, all help from men would amount to futility (Jeremiah 46:11-12). Relying solely on our strength or resources will ultimately lead to disappointment (Psalms 20:7-8). We must learn to trust the Lord alone (Proverbs 21:31; Proverbs 3:5-6).
